#221: How a country makes millions from AI
According to W3Techs, the suffix ".com" is used by ~45% of all websites as of writing.
Anguilla, the British Territory in the Eastern Caribbean, is now making millions thanks to the recent AI boom.
Anguilla is a small country with only ~$365mm in GDP (2022).
Anguilla → Artificial Intelligence
The ".ai" ending of a website url was gradually gaining popularity until the rise of ChatGPT in the end of 2022 changed the entire AI landscape.
The .ai domain used to be Anguilla country code (i.e. gov.ai).
Now, searches for .ai domains skyrocketed 203% in a year, overtaking .com and .io in terms of growth rate.
The .com domain's market share only grew 24% last year, while .ai domains grew ~161% last year.
10% of national GDP = “.ai”
In 2018, a few years before the public opened their eyes wide open to AI, Anguilla collected fees totalling $2.9mm, which was equivalent to the salary sum of 127 administrators, nearly 1% of the country's population.
Fast forward to 2023, Anguilla's government collected between $140 and "multiple thousands" each time an ai domain was bought at auction, collecting a total of $32mm from web developers around the world.
💡 Will this craze for .ai domains continue?
For a while, most likely yes
GoDaddy, one of the word's largest domain registrar and web hosting company (owning 62mm registered domains), says:
“Having a .ai domain name not only reflect your association with modern technology. It can also suggest that you are part of a new wave of innovative businesses embracing AI in your business model.”
