šŸ¢ these big ugly gray buildings

what do you think of the building in the photo?

it’s very imposing, blunt, and looks like it was made with unfinished concrete. well, that’s because it was. buildings such as this are part of brutalist architecture, and I’ve always found them aesthetically pleasing.

šŸ’ so, what is it?

why then, one might ask, were they built this way?

  1. the intent is to focus more on the material and not rely on other factors for architecture

  2. to stray away from skyscrapers or ā€œfancyā€ buildings (that can be associated with the upper-class) and be less pretentious

  3. concrete is cheaper to work with

šŸ— still ugly?

it is still hard to deny that the buildings are still somewhat unsettling. this is the exterior of a prison from the kubrick film ā€˜a clockwork orange’. brutalist structures are often used in dystopian films because of their crude aesthetic.

what do you think?
