it’s been a year since the russo-ukrainian war began on feb 20 of 2022

here’s a rundown of the global atmosphere surrounding this long ordeal

🇷🇺 putin

on feb 21, putin gave the state-of-the-nation address (should have been done at the end of last year, but oh well) marking the anniversary of the invasion on kyiv

some noteworthy statements he made:

  • most of the people of the donbas region (in eastern ukraine) want to be part of russia

  • ukraine and russia are victims of the west, and this is an existential war for russia

  • russia will no longer be a part of the new START (new strategic arms reduction treaty) meaning a potential return to nuclear weapons testing

    • the treaty puts a cap on the number of nuclear weapons russia and the us can possess and allows them to inspect each other’s facilities

🇺🇦 zelensky

ukrainian president zelensky also held a press conference to mark the symbolic day

  • ukraine has currently taken back more than half of the territory russia previously captured

  • zelensky to soldiers and allying nations: “if we all do our important homework, victory will be inevitable”

🇺🇸 biden

  • biden visited kyiv and met zelensky in an unannounced trip. air sirens were wailing as the two of them walked the streets

  • the us has sent 113 billion dollars in aid to ukraine over the course of the war and provided military support such as abrams tanks. ukraine has been requesting f-16s, but biden refused that notion

🇨🇳 xi jinping

trade reports showed that chinese companies were sending russia “sophisticated parts” for use on the battlefield

  • i.e. parts for radar, comms and even attack helicopters

  • china has refrained from even labeling the war as an invasion by russia

the data shows that this trade grew following the start of the war and the two countries’ partnership could be growing stronger – to the point that china fully supports russia

  • obviously, this could cause catastrophic consequences but we’ll have to wait and see
