• this is happening at the foxconn plant, which produces more than half of the world’s iphones

• workers protested against harsh working conditions, including delayed payments and some members having to share dormitories with covid patients

china is currently enforcing zero-covid lockdowns, similar to those the us went through in 2020 and 2021. people are being restricted from moving unless they have negative test results and factories are being shut down. in one case, people visiting shanghai’s disneyland had to stay after the park closed and could only leave when they were tested

apple has been steeering away from china and increasing focus on production in factories in india, so we can estimate this trend could accelerate

in terms of china’s lockdowns, we’ll have to wait to see how xi handles the situation - but tensions are definitely high
