velma is a beloved character from the scooby doo series, and for a long time fans have speculated she might be queer
in the new animated movie trick or treat scooby-doo! she will be a lesbian character
concern and criticism
the decision has been met with criticism from a number of sources such as the conservative media outlet daily wire
namely, concerns are that this is an attack on an established character and an attempt to push an lgbtq agenda
this isn’t the first time
however, there have been many attempts to make velma gay in the past
scooby-doo (2001)
director james gunn (of guardians of the galaxy fame) revealed that velma was originally gay in the script
scooby-doo! mystery incorporated (2010-2013)
producer tony cervone said the intention was to have velma come out in later seasons (and then the show was canceled)

the original artist who drew scooby-doo was a japanese immigrant who passed away 15 years ago
countless people have worked on shows with these characters for over 50 years
characters evolve with each iteration of a franchise for better or for worse.
i would like to add, though, it does seem convenient that it wasn’t possible throughout the years but now that it’s marketable she’s gay.
