trump gets trumped
a poll conducted last week shows that florida governor ron desantis beat donald trump as the prospective candidate for the 2024 elections. with him at 47% and trump at 42%, it does seem that many republicans are looking to desantis as the next hero to lead them into the presidential election
who is he?
let’s take a look at his achievements, starting from 2019 when he became governor of florida
during the covid pandemic, he did not enforce lockdowns or mask mandates
this approach led to florida’s economy not taking as bad of a blow as other states
the death toll was virtually along the national average
he signed a school safety bill into law in florida in response to mass shootings
culture war
he is also very much against liberal values, much like trump was, and has made himself an important figure in the fight against “wokeism”
desantis passed the so-called ‘don’t say gay’ bill, prohibiting sexual orientation education from not-age-appropriate students
he also passed the ‘stop woke act’, which prohibits education or training that makes people feel guilty about their race, gender, etc.
he has taken legislative measures to make sure education is not focused on political correctness, but received backlash from liberals for being hateful and discriminative
does he have a chance at being president?
i’m not here to tell you if he is or isn’t a good person. the important question is: can he become the next republican candidiate?
he is certainly more cool-headed and reasonable than trump, and is popular in florida (he won for a 2nd time with about 60% of the vote) so it is definitely possible. but he is also prone to being rude, so let’s see if he has the charisma to get a national audience on his side
