🦧 too crowded to win
"one of the best, affordable stock research platforms that hosts stock picking competitions”
📙 "buy-now-pay-later"
buy now, pay later ("bnpl") is an alternative method of purchase
it allows consumers to make purchases without paying for it and then paying for the amount little by little over time, usually with no interest
it is indeed very similar to the whole idea of credit cards, but a few key differences are:
bnpl often charges no interest
you can pay via several installments, unlike most credit cards’ monthly minimum payment
rarely do bnpl short-term financing options offer special cash backs or deals
💳 we’ve probably all heard of klarna by now…
yes, one of the leading companies in the bnpl space – they’re leading, but they’re losing money big time
klarna recently announced another 47% decrease in operating profit – well, actually, a loss of $1bn in '22
klarna makes money by charging its partnering merchants (for allowing their customers to have a bnpl option) rather than charger consumers fees as a credit card company would
honestly a well-intent business model that seemed feasible by many, but at the moment consumer transactions via klarna isn’t growing as fast as simply klarna’s operating costs are
🏁 too crowded to win
imo: perhaps the bnpl space is getting too crowded – too many are jumping on to this business model, and if one were to buy a bottle of wine online and there are five different bnpl options, it’s likely hard for klarna to have pricing power and grow their revenue as much as they’d like to, as they expand into more merchants and regions
already, we've got klarna, afterpay, affirm, amazon monthly, etc.
