petty officer 1st class tyler thompson / us navy

🦍 in early feb…

a chinese air balloon, which the chinese govt claims to be a civilian research balloon, was gunned down over the atlantic ocean after traveling across the us. it was:

  • equipped with solar panels so it could charge while in motion

  • about the size of 3 school buses

  • monitoring communications such as radio or phone calls – it even flew near us military bases

🦍 why balloons?

  • balloons are capable of reaching high altitudes and staying in the same spot - this first balloon went as high as 66,000 ft

  • not a lot of metal, not many rough edges – hard to detect on radar

  • hard to shoot down – it’s so big it could cause civilian harm, and hard to tell where the pieces will land

🦍 three more ufo’s

the us military shot down some more unidentified objects. in order, they were located:

  1. off the coast of alaska

  2. canada

  3. the great lakes region

none of these were linked to the chinese gov’t, and it is still unclear what they are – as we have not yet recovered all of the remains

🦍 why the sudden increase

the north american aerospace command (norad) usually disregards certain objects based on size, speed, altitude… because tracking every single thing in the sky is unfeasible

  • the recent discovery of the 3 objects following the spy balloon is due to a change in norad’s filters. they searched for smaller, slower, lower objects

  • due to this change, more objects that would have before been undetected are popping up

  • indeed, there were three cases that turned out to be chinese spy balloons during the trump administration as well - so it seems china has been sending these balloons for a while
